Online Courses in Indian Scenario- Challenges and Prospects by Dr. Revathi Viswanathan
With the growing popularity of Massive Open Online Courses across the globe, this presentation would discuss the possibility of conducting such courses in the Indian scenario. The language curriculum, which forms part of core course, offered in Indian technical institutions focus mainly on training students through face-to- face method. The evaluation system patronizes traditional model of making students perform within the class in order to assess their communicative ability. Teachers too feel confident and comfortable to be a part of this system. In the case of students, they like to be guided by teachers (within classrooms) for mastering the language skills in the target language. These facts raise the question of feasibility of promoting online courses in Indian scenario. In this presentation, the presenter would highlight students' preparedness in doing online courses and the challenges that universities face in offering them. She would further discuss the ways of introducing online tutoring (an attempt she has made for developing the language skills) as part of a core subject program, which in turn would prepare teachers and students for taking online courses in future.
